Happy New Year! Will 2013 be a Brave New World?

Happy New Year!  I love New Year’s Eve and day.  It’s almost like that feeling of the first day of school or being the first person to walk in an area of fresh snow… it means new beginnings, new opportunities, a new trail… a fresh start.

In reading today’s New York Times, there’s an article “Silencing the Smartphone – Some companies See a Benefit in “Switching Off’”. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/01/business/some-companies-seek-to-wean-employees-from-their-smartphones.html   I can’t help but think… can this be a sign that the Times they are a changin’?  Are companies really starting to understand that while employees may be passionate about their careers or current role, there needs to be a work-life balance?  While the original book Brave New World offered visions into a futuristic technology, are we as a society realizing the importance of simpler times and core values?  I hope so!!!  I found the article to be exciting and feel cautiously optimistic.

Either way, it reminds me that as individuals we need to Live In Charge and take responsibility for our own journeys.  We work to live and shouldn’t live to work.  Time is precious and tomorrow is promised to no one.  We can help each other along the way, but we need to take time to enjoy the view, appreciate what we have right now and develop a plan for best next steps.  It’s a great time to take an inventory and see what you would like to improve.  Are you giving yourself enough time to “disconnect” and do you find it helps you tackle challenges with a renewed rested sense of drive?  I know I do and even if it’s 5 minutes to sit quiet and commune with nature or listen to my breath, I’m refreshed.

Over the last year, I’ve been blessed to witness miracles and major transformations and am optimistic about the future.    As the Career Yenta, I would like to help others be happy in their lives.   It begins with you!  It takes courage to take the next step!
